ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT

Shaw Brothers approach to reducing our environmental impact means looking at all aspects of the business and how we can integrate new solutions to create meaningful change to our environment.

Solar farm

Shaw Brothers has built a new solar farm as part of the reclamation of an old gravel pit. Every year, this 3.2-megawatt array generates 4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. This electricity generation will cover all of Shaw Brothers usage including our shop, asphalt plant, both stationary crushers and return extra power back into the grid.

ASPHALT PLANT

Our Asphalt Plant is one of the most environmentally friendly plants in New England. The plant is powered by natural gas which emits 99% less Sulphur oxide, 80% less nitrogen oxide, 40% less CO2 and no heavy metals or soot particles.

MIX DESIGNS

Our custom-made mix designs contain 20% to 50% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) which reduces the need for virgin material by the same amount. By using recycled pavement, we reduce the amount of liquid asphalt needed by over 20%.

CRUSHING PLANT

In 2018 Shaw Brothers installed a new Telsmith Crushing Plant. The extensive conveyor system will reduce emissions from trucking and loading equipment and has the ability to stock pile over 3/4 million tons of various stone and gravel sizes eliminating the need for rehandling thus saving emissions.

We also converted our Dayton crushing plant from a diesel-powered generator to electric power.

PORTABLE CRUSHING

Shaw Brothers was the first contractor in northern New England to purchase a track-mounted portable crusher with a magnetic separator. We now have ten portable crushing plants, eight of them on tracks, enabling us to work multiple sites simultaneously or maximize recycling throughput at one large site.

Track-mounted portable crushers allow us to recycle materials on the project site, so we don’t need to haul construction demolition debris somewhere else for processing. In many cases, recycled aggregate can be used on the same project to further minimize transportation cost to and from the site and minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Equipment

In 2019 Shaw Brothers purchased the first 988K XE CAT Loader in New England. This electric drive loader will save 4,250 gallons of diesel fuel over the prior 988 H loader that Shaw Brothers owned.

Over 50% of our equipment and trucks are equipped with Tier 4 Diesel engines. These new engines meet the strictest EPA emission standards for particulate matter, black soot and nitrogen oxides.
